Becoming Monsoon Friendly

Pitter, patter raindrops,
Pitter, patter raindrops,
I'm wet through!
I'm wet through!

The Monsoon is upon us and it’s time to bring out the umbrellas & raincoats from the closet. Sitting on the balcony with a hot cup of tea and your favourite novel can be quite calming. But the rain brings with itself a lot of other complexities. One needs to be extremely careful, especially in case of children when it comes to the monsoons.

Children love the rain. A game of Football or a cup of tea; both become essentially memorable when seasoned with a dash of rain. But it is in this season that children tend to fall ill and have diseases like the flu, stomach infection and sometimes even food poisoning. Here are a few points on how you can make this Monsoon a healthy one and enjoy the season too!

Say NO to Spicy & Oily Food:
Everyone enjoys a treat, especially when the weather provides a lovely backdrop. But however tempting those pakodas and bhajiyasmay seem in this wonderful weather, avoid them. To completely abstain your children from eating fried food is not the key. Instead, you can prepare these dishes at home which are cooked in a much healthy manner and with better ingredients.

DO drink a Lot of Water:
The weather around us has become quite cool and compared to the summer, we may not feel as thirsty as we did before. But water intake is absolutely necessary. Mumbai has a very humid weather that means even in the rains, you may sweat. Thus, drinking water from time to time will help you stay hydrated even in these rains. So encourage your child to have a glass of water at regular intervals.

Maintain a STRICT diet:
A lot of food during the monsoon can prove to be harmful in terms of one’s health. Maintain a strict regime for you and your children that will nourish your body and not cause diseases like stomach infection and diarrhoea. One should avoid eating non-veg, especially fish, as monsoon is the breeding season for fishes. Other than non-veg, you should stop your child from having fruit juices on the roadside. Prepare fresh fruit juices at home and let the whole family sit together and enjoy a sip!

Go out for Camping:
The monsoon is the best season to go out on treks and camping. Mumbai provides a wide array of options where you and your child can spend quality time together and he can learn a lot of new things. Hill-stations like Lonavala and Matheran are quite nearby and are extremely beautiful in this weather. Trips like these provide an opportunity for the whole family to get together and bond with each other.

The monsoon provides various opportunities to have fun but it is our responsibility to take care of our children in the process. Prevention is always better than cure and maintaining a healthy body is the best way to prevent certain monsoon-related diseases. Spend enough time with your children and help them learn new things bysharingyour interestingstories with them. Make this monsoon a reason for your child and you to bond.

Happy Monsoon!
